Why are new-in-box Game Boy products so ridiculously expensive compared to modern gaming products?

Just taking a quick browse through Amazon.com searching for "Game Boy" will blow your mind. Why have these products maintained such a seemingly artificially high value? Is it just rarity as a result of discontinues product lines?

Any insight would be appreciated.
