Pocket Monsters VS Pokemon

I don't know if text posts are allowed on this subreddit, but before it gets removed or anything, can someone give me proof or disproof that Pokemon is a shortened version of Pocket Monsters that they thought would catch on better. Pok-pocket Mon-Monsters. I dunno. Never posted a text thread to this subreddit before so I don't really know the reddiquette here.
