Issues with Super Monkey Ball 2

I bought Super Monkey Ball 2 the other day from a pawn shop, still in its original plastic wrapping, but when I tried to play it, I get all sorts of graphical issues and it freezes but the music continues, like so: http://i.imgur.com/Gt1k5.jpg. Is this a known issue with the game?

My GameCube plays SSBM, Mario Kart Double Dash, Luigi's Mansion, and Wind Waker just fine, and the disc is brand new, with no visible scratches on it, so I'm at a loss.
