Can anyone tell me why my hand brake in my 16' accord keeps engaging by itself? I have had no issues with it until now, and I couldnt see anything stuck underneath. Any tips? Also excuse the mess inside

The car is mad at you for leaving a mess so it is on strike.

Honestly it's understandable but in my defense my gf doesn't clean up after herself. And in her defense, I don't put my dishes in the sink after I use them for food

Lmao gotta do the infamous cable adjustment

So it's a shop thing or is it something an amatuer can attempt to fix?

You can definitely do it on your own. Look it up on YouTube I am sure you will find something. I did this couple years back on a buddy's accord iirc you have to take the panel with the rear floor vents off and then there is a bolt that you have to tighten

The hand gesture at the end is priceless

The adjuster is under the center console, so it has to be removed. It pays to have extra clips in case any break/disappear during removal. Adjusting it is easy and only requires a 10mm wrench usually.

Thanks, I'll be doing this after my work week

You could do it during your break at work. It's amazingly easy

Even without wrenches? The only tools I have access to atm are tire changing kit tools. Besides, I left my car at home and took my lady's to work because I didnt wanna drive around with the parking brake constantly engaging itself

It’s really easy to do. Look it up on YouTube. I had to tighten mine and it took 5 minutes top. You will have to go in from the back seats. The back plastic to the console pops off. DM me if you’re having trouble.

Sounds good, then. I won't have the time until after Saturday so I'll update here if anything goes wrong. Someone else told me it could be a brake caliper problem too

9th gen accords are notorious for having seized parking brake actuators. I’d look at the rear calipers before adjusting that cable. There’s a lever on the calipers the cable attaches to that should move freely. If it doesn’t move or doesn’t return to its original position you have a seized actuator and the caliper will need to be replaced. If this is the case adjusting the cable will do nothing to fix the actual problem and you’ll prematurely wear your rear pads

This is correct. Do not adjust the cables until you ensure the parking brake levers on both calipers fully return when released. If they do not, replace the rear calipers.

Very interesting. What are the signs of this? My car didn't have trouble moving when I noticed the handbrake issue

1
CataractGlasses•

You likely wouldn’t notice a difference. What happens is they’ll build up corrosion in the actuator from a lack of movement from not being used. They stick in one position and put pressure on the pads even when the brakes are released causing them to drag and wear excessively. Even if you never use your parking brake the corrosion builds up over time and the actuator keeps tightening.

Damn already then. Thanks for the info

Unfortunately it’s the nature of the beast. I have a manual 9th gen so I use the parking brake religiously. I’ve put 2 sets of rear calipers on it in the 2 years I’ve owned it. I blame Nissin for poor design quality.

Your parking brake cable might be stuck or out of adjustment. Its common for those to brake on automatics because the parking brake never gets used it siezes up. Then when its used 1 time it gets stuck on

Yup, I always use it when I'm parking on an incline but it's been a good few weeks since I've parked on one until last night. This sub is awesome, almost immediate identifications of the problem along with solutions

Actually i would check your rear calipers first these cars are notorious for the e brake cabke on the calipers sticking take a 14mm wrench and some penatrating oil spray the 14mm bolt hooked up to the e brake cabke on the rear calipers and then move it back and forth till it frees up i do it almost everyday at the honda dealership i work at

My 2014 accord had a "weak" hand brake, it just needed the bolts tighten and it worked fine. I forgot the socket size but I remember needing a fairly long extension

2
thewaffleofrofl•

That lever pulls two cables to actuate each parking brake. My guess is one of those cables is seized and is not returning fully.

Ultron-v1OP'16 Accord Coupe 2.4L•

That's exactly what it is. I took off the center cover from the back seat and flipped it upside down to create tension, but it's a temporary fix as I don't have the tools necessary to actually get the work done. Won't be able to do anything until Sunday

1
thewaffleofrofl•

Right on. It'll be an easy fix once you get around to it.

Yeah I was already super proud of myself the first time I had to change my own tire, if I can do this by myself I'll be riding that high for weeks

Aww the car loves you so much that it can't hide it's excitement despite your best efforts.

It’s probably the actuators seized. Easy fix, check your calipers, and see if the lever, that the cable attaches to is moving, and if it doesn’t move, then it’s seized up, all that should take is adjusting the cable some.

1
Toocloseandtoofast•

Your brake calipers in the rear may be seized
