GRRM: "Back with Tyrion" in TWoW (Spoilers Extended)

SpoilerEXTENDED

Tyrion's Plot in TWoW

Background

GRRM posted on his Not a Blog that he was:

I was back with Tyrion this past week.

This means absolutely nothing, but to keep discussion rolling as we await TWoW, I thought it would be fun to gather everything we know about Tyrion's plot in TWoW. I will unashamedly do this for every mention going forward lol (as I have for the last few).

Recent SSM's

GRRM mentioned working on Tyrion chapters in June 2020:

In between tapings, I return to Westeros.   Of late I have been visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah. -SSM, Writing, Reading, Writing: 23 June 2020

and August 2020:

For the nonce, it is what it is.   My life is at home, on hold, and I am spending the days in Westeros with my pals Mel and Sam and Vic and Ty.    And that girl with no name, over there in Braavos. -SSM, Back in Westeros: 15 August 2020

and November 2020:

Of late I have been spending a lot of time with the Lannisters.  Cersei and Tyrion in particular.   I’ve also paid a visit to Dorne, and dropped in to Oldtown a time or three.   In addition to turning out new chapters, I’ve been revising some old ones (some very old)… including, yes, some stuff I read at cons ages ago, or even posted online as samples.   I tweak stuff constantly, and sometimes go beyond tweaking, moving things around, combining chapters, breaking chapters in two, reordering stuff. -SSM, Back to Westeros: 8 Nov 2020

Note: these mentions could be regarding different Tyrion chapters or the same one that GRRM is editing/revising. We have no way of knowing.

"Released" Tyrion Chapters

There have been two Tyrion chapters that have been read at different points:

  • Tyrion I (only available in fan summary): [Summary I] and [Summary II]. He also mentioned possibly having to rewrite this chapter (which I wouldn't mind as it would save space)
  • Tyrion II TWOW Excerpts - Tyrion I (I know it says one, but the other chapter obviously occurs first).

I would not mind at all if those chapters were combined.

Events that take place:

  • Tyrion plays cyvasse with Brown Ben and tries to convince him to switch sides,
  • Battle of Fire begins while the Second Sons await orders from Brown Ben, who returns and decides to have them switch sides (the Windblown did as well)

Speculation on Plot Points

Up until this point this post has been pretty objective. I am going to now list out some of the plot points Tyrion may or may not be involved in going forward (which requires some speculation).

  • The Second Sons

Tyrion signs on with the Second Sons in ADWD who are part of the Slaver Alliance (Brown Ben switched sides due to Dany's refusal to use her dragons). As I mentioned in Tyrion's early TWoW chapters, they decide to switch back to Team Dany's side.

  • Post Battle of Fire

The power vacuum created after the Battle of Fire is one of my favorite plot points. Assuming Dany has a bit of plot (a chapter or two) with the Dothraki, we could potentially see different attempts to ride dragons, while I don't really expect Tyrion to ride one (although there is some potential foreshadowing) the events of this (ex: dragonhorn and brown ben's two drops of dragonblood) have serious implications on what happens next.

I mention this because certain factions could end up trying to do things on their own (either completely, or thinking it is what Dany would want). My point is that I don't think Dany is just going to return to a completely unified "Team Dany" post Battle of Fire Meereen and Tyrion's place for this should be interesting.

  • Tyrion and Dany

Probably the biggest even upcoming in Tyrion's plotline, it should be noted that they are expected to spend much of TWoW apart:

“Well, Tyrion and Dany will intersect, in a way, but for much of the book they’re still apart,” he says. “They both have quite large roles to play here. Tyrion has decided that he actually would like to live, for one thing, which he wasn’t entirely sure of during the last book, and he’s now working toward that end—if he can survive the battle that’s breaking out all around him. And Dany has embraced her heritage as a Targaryen and embraced the Targaryen words. So they’re both coming home.” -SSM, EW Interview: 26 June 2014

and he was juggling on how to intersect them:

I have like 10 different novels and I’m juggling the timeline — here’s what’s happening to Tyrion, here’s what’s happening to Dany, and how they intersect. -SSM, EW Interview: 19 Nov 2018

GRRM also mentions some valuable info Tyrion might have for Dany:

Martin is good at keeping secrets, but he does offer up one tidbit—a reminder that the royal Daenerys Targaryen was given the histories of her world as a wedding gift but neglected to read them. “But you know who does know a lot of that?” he says coyly. “Tyrion.” These two characters, who have thus far not met, seem to be headed for a dramatic encounter; is he dropping a hint about how it will go? Martin chuckles and stays mum. -SSM, Vulture Interview: 4 Nov 2014

I will note he already shared some very valuable info with Young Griff. I also expect Tyrion to provoke Dany similar to how he did Jon/Young Griff (also noting howhis story weaves among the dragons)

  • Casterly Rock

A quite often theorized event is that Tyrion will use the drains (that he was previously in charge of) to take Casterly Rock for Dany.

  • No More POVs for Dany?

GRRM was asked about Tyrion/Dany both remaining POVs once they meet(in the wrong forum) and said no comment. That said, while GRRM seemingly regrets not giving Robb a POV, he liked having the War of the Five Kings where no king had their own POV. I mention this since its possible he could do the same thing with the Dance of the Dragons II where all the dragons don't have a POV anymore. Young Griff (Jon Con/Arianne), Dany (Tyrion and whoever stays/survives between Barristan/Victarion) and Jon Snow (Melisandre).

TLDR: Jus a quick rundown on the info we have for Tyrion in TWoW from SSMs to available chapters and then some speculation on his plotline's future (dragons, Dany, Casterly Rock).
