How many business suits should you have to wear one to work?

I come from a poor family and business look was never something I have seen in the family and friends circle nor was taught how to maintain. I usually wear chinos, polo shirt and a jacket.

One thing however stuck with me is to never wear the same thing in a week and preferably a month, so I have a quite a collection of those that I can mix and match.

A while ago I treated myself with a business suit to get a sharp look for interviews and meetings. I took a day finding right fit and spent about £400.

I understand this is not the high end, however a few people genuinely said I look good in it.

Now to my question. I had another meeting with the same people a couple of days later and had to put that suit again, as this is my only one. I felt completely devastated, that they already seen me in it and I have not even dry cleaned it between the meetings. I had a different tie though.

I noticed that they worn completely different suits, so it was a disaster inside my mind.

The meeting didn't bring any results and we never met again.

A person who is wearing suits casually - how many do they need in their wardrobe?

At workplace I see manager is wearing the same type of suit - is it literally the same suit he wears every day or does he have multiple pairs? It's too awkward to ask and it could be taken wrong.

I know one guy who has 7 pairs of the same pants and shirts and he wears fresh ones each day.

Is there even a point wearing a £400 suit if people you meet wear £4000-10000 ones?

Can you buy 7 different suits and mix and match them?

Dude.

NO ONE thinks about you as much as you. I don't mean that as an insult. It should be comforting in this situation.

Personally, I have 4 suits, but could easily get by with 2.

I have: Very Dark Grey with a hint of stripes, grey, navy blue, and khaki.

The khaki and grey could probably go. 7-10 shirts and 12ish ties to rotate are more than sufficient for most any corporate job IMHO.

And it's not the price. It's the fit. A $500 suit with quality tailoring is going to wear and look better than a $3k suit with bullshit tailoring. Most all materials are quality these days. Don't get sucked into diminishing returns. A $3k suit is in no way 600% the quality/fit/appearance of a $500 suit.

I'd have like 3.

How a suit looks depends a lot on tie, shirt, accessories. Have more options for those. The suit itself can be the same and the outfit looks totally different with a different treatment.

If it's a bit more casual wear jacket with different pants.

I can guarantee they didn't notice the suit

You do not dry clean your suit every time you wear it. Dry cleaning works havoc on textiles. Every month or two is sufficient. Meanwhile you brush it with a clothes brush, hang it on a proper hanger, and let it air.

You need at least three suits, and you can certainly find a decent one for under the ~$500 you spent. Visit consignment shops and get a used one tailored to fit you properly. IDK how much money you spend, if the collar gaps or the sleeves or pants are too short or long, you look pathetic. You can go farther with a sport jacket and coordinating pants. DO NOT mix and match the pieces of your suits.
