Post apocalyptic book recommendations

I'm looking for a book with a post apocalyptic or dystopian world where the main plot is centered around discovering how this world came to be. I'm thinking of something like mistborn but creepier. Any good recommendation?

The Road, A boy and his dog.

It took me a while to realise these are two separate book names

I’d read it

I enjoyed The Road as a book and thought it was more moving than the film.

I also liked The Dog Stars, which has some similarities to The Road but more hope. Soft Apocalypse is also an interesting read with original concepts.

Edit: clarification

Both were made into movies.

I'm assuming that you're referring to The Road.

Maybe not super creepy, but has some stuff going on for sure

I hope you like it. She writes a lot of Sci Fi too.

David Gemmell's Jerusalem Man trilogy might be a good fit.

N. K. Jemisin's Shattered Earth trilogy is fairly popular as well, though I didn't enjoy reading it personally.

I thought Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) was very similiar to the Broken Earth books in terms of the overall plot/worldbuilding, but was just done better, and was told from a much more interesting perspective. Plus, the way the worldbuilding is done creates a really interesting atmosphere for most of the book.

It was never officially translated to English, but there is a very good unofficial translation you can find relatively easily, its just hosted on a wordpress page.

Thanks for the recommendation.

The Book of Koli by MR Carey. Post climate crisis world where only small pockets of humanity have survived, but their knowledge, language and skills have declined. Some technology remains but people don't really understand it anymore. This trilogy gets better with each. Installment and totally nails the ending .

I don't know about creepier than mistborn (I guess parts of it qualifies), but you could try The Obernewtyn Chronicles.

Wool by Hugh Howey. It’s a trilogy, with Shift and Dust.

The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K Jemisin

I am Legend is a shorter vampire story but it does address how things came to be so you know. I hope it helps
