I have noticed this as well when using Android VPN applications. The built in VPN client is reliable but that's assuming you use OpenVPN or a L2TP VPN

Have you tried configuring a VPN via Settings > Network > Add built-in VPN?

I've been using the Private Internet Access Android app on my four Chrome OS devices with no major issues. Once connected, the VPN connection stays active 99% of the time. There are times I need to manually connect the VPN, but it automatically connects when I unlock the device 95% of the time.

I'm experiencing this lately as well (currently 104 beta), particularly with Tailscale and Shadowsocks. This same setup worked stably for months but has become basically unusable in the past week or so.

I'm testing to see if setting the Tailscale Android client as an always-on VPN (as described here) makes a difference. So far it seems to be a significant improvement, Android hasn't killed the connection at all in 30 minutes of monkeying around online, even with a bazillion tabs and Linux apps going.

fingers crossed
