Roland TD-17KVX - CY-13R Bell No Longer Triggers

Hello,

I've had this kit for about two years. The bell started out perfect, then became tough to trigger but now it finally just stopped triggering altogether. Before it fully stopped working, the area to trigger the bell was very small and it would only work every other hit. I don't think it's a cable issue just based on how the bell went from sort of working to not working over the last week.

Should I attempt to repair this myself? Sending to Rolland is not an option because of where I live, but I could always buy a new CY-13R. Any advice or precautions if I do open it up to try to fix it?

Thanks!

It seems like you've answered your own question without realizing. If you don't mind buying a new cymbal, then there's really no risk in trying to repair yours yourself. If it works, great, and if it doesn't you just buy the new cymbal anyway.

That being said, I had a similar issue with the crash cymbal and the new ones are damn near impossible to disassemble without breaking them. Not sure if the ride is the same.

Lemon cymbals are the way to go. Don't get another Roland one.

I replaced my ride with a Lemon ride and the bell triggers so much better.

Agreed I like the 15” Lemmon much more than the 13 Roland ride.

This is great to hear, I have a 15” lemon in the mail for my Alesis kit.

Use the side of your stick, not the tip

Might have to look into this. My bell needs alot of force to trigger

Hit it with the side of your stick

Try hitting the bell zone with the side of your stick. All roland ride cymbals with the exception of the 18" digital need to be played like this to make it work. My 1st 3 zone ride was the 12r/c, when I first got it I thought the bell was broken. I did a little YouTube research and found that this is how to play it. It's just the way they are. If that doesn't work, than there IS something wrong with it

I did try hitting it on many spots on the side of the bell, where it used to always work. It definitely stopped working. Yesterday, it worked intermittently and today I couldn't get it to trigger once.

Today I just started peeling half of the rubber off. It breaks a thin piece of rubber connecting it to the pad. I had a peek and can see the green sensor where the bell is. I am going to try the duct tape mod where you basically cover the bell sensor to reduce the distance. Hopefully that ends up working!

I have the same problem but on my case I exchanged the cable to another cymbal and it does not work (i tried the other cymbal cable on the bell connector and it works with its assigned sound) so the issue is the cable or the module itself, don’t know what to do now…
