One thing I don't understand is why NMS doesn't have a dynamic weather system.

Why is it so binary? Either "weather" is on or off. If it's off, you're safe, if it's on, you're dying.

What happened to snow or gentle or heavy rain or winds that don't kill you?

It’s just another way this game is frustratingly shallow. There’s fun to be had, but it could be so much more. The devs need to start thinking about reworking stuff that’s already in the game, rather than continually adding new sets of mechanics that aren’t particularly meaningful and don’t properly interact with each other.

102
HorsoPonoto•

Totally agreed.

Well to be fair, it looks like they finally started doing that this year, at least with the Sentinel and Outlaws updates which added new stuff, but it was to supplement the existing 5 year old mechanics which have also been reworked and made better.

I just hope they continue this streak, they said they have a never ending list of stuff they want to do and there's only so much they can change in each update. But 4.0 seems to have improved freighter bases and asteroids, so I'm hopeful they're actually still expanding the existing content rather than adding pointless stuff.

36
Laifander•

4.0 is out? I thought we were still on 3 so far?

3
HorsoPonoto•

No, 4.0 will most likely come next month.

The freighter parts and asteroid improvements have been leaked by HG in their Outlaws and Leviathan trailers and patch notes as well as a few players have datamined the freighter parts too.

Sorry for my comment being a bit confusing, I meant to say it's speculated those features will be included in 4.0

3
MR_krunchy•

Well they've reworked space combat so it's actually fun now, ground combat... It's a bit more fun but multi tool clunkyness kinda ruins it

I hope somewhere down the line they decide to rework planets as a whole, if that means a wipe then I wouldn't really care

7
SappyPJs•

I actually like the ground combat a lot more. Sure it could be polished but there is actual degree of danger a lot more on the ground than in space, at least in my experience.

This game is not supposed to be like COD or CS or the likes so I get why they didn't focus as much on the ground combat and I appreciate that actually

1
notveryAI•

Well, it's alien planets. I'd not expect too many planets to have subtle weather.

But some rare paradise planets with harmless, but spectacular rains would be amazing. Like - when it rains on Earth, it doesn't mean that temperature from 23C spikes to 163C.

63
BurningBeechbone:PC:•

I have a planet that “storms” where the clouds come in and it gets dark and gloomy and the system will warn you of an approaching storm, but then it never actually rains and I take no damage. It’s neat.

30
alexonfyre•

Yeah I have a paradise planet that has occasional super heated rain, but I usually don't even have to recharge my hazard protection before it subsides and goes back to normal. I was on another planet that would warn me of storms and they would happen but there was no effect at all

4
PatronymicPenguin•

I feel the same way about the planet biomes, tbh. I would want to put so much more effort into exploring the world if it was more dynamic instead of one type all the way around. The planets are big enough to include diversity. Have a dangerously hot area and a cold area and a lush but toxic area.

6
A1rh3ad•

I haven't played in a while but did they ever manage to even fix it so multiple players could the same weather conditions at the same time?

3
HorsoPonoto•

I don't have much experience with multiplayer so I don't know about the weather thing, but a common one is that within one frame it'll go from day to night or vice versa seemingly at random. Even in space the skybox will instantly jump at some point.

3
pip_ninja•

I don't think so.

1
A1rh3ad•

Wow, what a pile of hot garbage. It's bad enough how bad we were lied to. Idc how many downvotes this comment gets the game is a hot steaming pile of garbage.

PokedEyes•

I found a vapour planet that has rain, but it's safe! Want the address? It's in eissentam

3
Mega-Analyzer•

You bring up a valid point. The game could have more dynamic weather effects, ranging from harmless to cautionary, to downright dangerous (beyond the "extreme" rating).

Rarely, there are some planets that have "bubble storms", which are no threat to the player. They may only occur on certain lush biome types, though.

3
HorsoPonoto•

Oh yeah, I once found a planet that has "Haunted Blood rain" or something and it only inverted the colors and produced some kind of energy that isn't anything like an Earth-like storm, and it didn't harm me.

....But it's still binary lol

3
VividVerism•

I have a base on a Toxic planet that is constantly gently raining at all times. It's not harmful at all (beyond being on a Toxic planet. It gets storms too where there's a green fog and the rain intensifies, but the rain is always there.

I'm pretty sure I've been to other toxic planets that do the same thing, but it has been a while since I intentionally landed on one to find out.

2
Nolindor•

I actually have a base on a paradise planet with a gentle rain and slight clouds of mist, no storms of damaging weather effects at all.

2
kaplish•

We use to have regular rain Pre-Next I miss that I don't know why they feel like they needed to take that out they could had kept it and have some planets weather have regualr rain and some planets like this.

20
PokedEyes•

Look for vapour planets! I just made a base on one and it's perfectly liveable, with normal rain!

10
Thibbledorf_Pwent•

I recently found a chill steamy planet. It's basically just hot spring looking coves all the way down 10/10

2
JoshuaSlowpoke777•

Do you actually land on planets with aggressive sentinels for more than 5 seconds?

14
rhododeronim•

I had lore mission on it with portal in artemis path

5
PokedEyes•

Yeah! Since the Sentinel companion update, I have so much fun going to aggressive planets and shooting through them all. It's cool to turn them off afterwards and explore. Im hoping the off switch becomes permanent in the future.

3
JoshuaSlowpoke777•

…Agressive sentinel worlds have an off switch??

1
PokedEyes•

Yeah! You can use a Sentinel boundary chart to take you straight to it, or you can just fight your way through all five levels of security and it'll tell you where it is. There's also a multi tool at the same location.

8
PM_Me_Frosted_Tits•

Does it just make them normal or can you deactivate all sentinels on the whole world?

1
zoqaeski•

All Sentinels have an off switch. You either beat all five levels (though once you get to Level 5, destroying the Walker and Minotaur is enough) or go to a Sentinel Pillar, destroy the control nodes, and then deactivate them.

2
emelem66•

I do, if I want to gather gravatino balls.

1
Thibbledorf_Pwent•

Ah, so 10 seconds then lol

1
emelem66•

Nah, I run around and collect as many as I can. By the time the Sentinels get to where I was, I am at the next patch of gravatinos. I then circle back to my ship and take off and outrun the sentinel fighters and get away.

1
Sinistrad•

I have played a fair amount of Elite: Dangerous and NMS. So of course I read the warning text in the last frame in Elite's default ship voice. At which point I had to check which sub I was in like 3 times. 🤣

11
TheWoodPony•

CyberAceKina•

Paradise planets shouldn't have any weather though? Unless they have an activated element on them as one of their resources... if they don't, the weather is always some variation of calm/anomalous(if it has bubbles)

10
ultimate52•

Correct! If your paradise planet has storms...then its not a paradise planet. Tropical, grassy, etc all look like paradise planets, but may have storms. If you come across a description that literally says "paradise" then it shouldn't have storms at all iirc.

7

they exist paradise doesn't automatically mean perfect weather. i believe ive seen them but cant recall specifically but my capital planet is paradise and features "toxic wind" it occasionally has like a 1.2 tox wind which honestly I never even noticed it until the other day. i bet earth has toxic wind lol

2
Zargastic•

This is why i skip almost every paradise or tropical planets because they always seem to have a lot of annoying storms. Desert or swamp planets are the best!

5

The likely hood of storms isn't connected to the type of planet. Desert and swamp planets are just as likely to have storms as tropical planets. The only difference is the type of storm so desert planets will either have fire storms or sandstorms while lush planets always have superheated rain storms. They all kill you in the same amount of time it's just the visuals that changed.

The biome of planets that don't have storms are airless planets.

The severity of the storm per planet is pretty much random though so some tropical planets wont have storms at all and some will have extreme storms. Same with desert and everyone else. If you get a planet with storms all the time it's just your bad luck

12
Zargastic•

I guess i'm just unlucky with Paradise and Tropical planets because almost every one i've visited so far have really bad weather.

2
I_Enjoy_Beer•

I think I've encountered three paradise planets so far and none of them have had storms. I've always just assumed paradise planets were danger-free (no sentinels or storms), but I guess that isn't the case and I'm just super lucky.

2
KDaBlasian•

I think red, blue and green galaxies have a chance for "extreme" weather. These storms destroy your resistances 3x as fast as a normal planet.

2
Lexicat666•

What’s a swamp planet

2

Planets that are swamps. They are listed in game as reeking planets, marshy planets, quagmire planets ect.

They are more likely to have oceans than other types of planets

3
Lexicat666•

Ahh, i too love those planets I called them island planets tho

1

Well islands can appear on other planets as well

1
emelem66•

I've found that planets listed as Paradise Planets usually don't have any bad weather at all. Of course, it likely depends on which galaxy you are in.

2
MoistImplement2001•

I was really lucky. My second world is a paradise moon with bountiful weather, I think and not come across sentinels yet.

5
Agressive_Loafing•

I am a sucker for non-traditional plant colors like purple and blue.

3
PokedEyes•

Can you get to eissentam? I might have the perfect planet for you.

1
Thibbledorf_Pwent•

Every time I find a pretty blue planet the sun comes up aaaaaand it's orange? 😠

1
WhaneTheWhip•

I found a nice paradise moon a year ago, however that save became corrupt and thus deleted. I've been looking for that moon since then with no luck. I have the name of the moon and the planet but no address and no notes on the name of the system. I wish there was a list of all of my system discoveries from past saves that I could look up and get the address for.

3
zoqaeski•

I wonder if you could export your discoveries from a save file? I usually rename mine to include the Galactic Coordinates so I can map the galaxy as I explore. It helps for quick transportation to systems via portal, especially when there is no space station or to jump between pirate and regulated systems.

1
WhaneTheWhip•

That would be a nice feature, I have a naming system too, but only when the system and planets strike me in some way.

1
fartcloud101•

I thought one of the older updates was supposed to fix this superheated rain on paradise planets issue. Guess not!

2
moogoothegreat•

What's weird is that I have a base on a planet that has weather described as "lethal pressure variations" but I've never experienced said storms... ever. The normal weather is always pleasant too. Thus why I have a base on it lol.

2
Flufypigy•

Maybe the pressure variation is under water?

1
moogoothegreat•

Underwater seems just as nice as above!

2
Flufypigy•

Wow, that’s so wild! Underground? I think I’ve been to a planet where it says it storms and it never does before too, so idk 🤷‍♀️

1
zoqaeski•

What kind of planet is it? Does it have bubbles in the atmosphere?

1
moogoothegreat•

Not sure the kind, but yes, it does have bubbles!

1

Why everyone has a problem with sentinels? It's fun to wipe them out, they don't attack if you inside your base.

2
Lexicat666•

Wow, what kind of ring is that?!

1
OkDistribution9731•

After hours of searching I finally found a paradise moon, no sentinels just infinite poison mist that doesn’t seem to do anything from what I can tell. Has a few aggressive animals but I’ll deal with it

1
Voremage:PS:•

My paradise moon has cool weather, no storms, a portal, a S power spot nearby, only flying animals and no sentinels. The only thing it lacks is a cool blue sky instead of the orange one but heh I am already satisfied with it. ;)

I love my balmy, no sentinel planet. All I have to do is keep my life support charged.

1
Thibbledorf_Pwent•

My very first paradise world is a beautiful, peaceful, sunset colored heaven. Cute little rainbow bubble creatures and everything. No weather, no sentinels, and lots of resources! For me. I didn't know it did that thing where your first area is tame for you or whatever. I'm still really new... My husband came around and almost got melted by an extreme fire storm/murked by the apparently very aggressive sentinels. Oh, and the cute rainbow bubbles are deadly 😭

So I guess it'll always be my exclusive safe space. I wish my pet that I got there was half as spicy as the wild ones lol

1

Gives me memories of crashing on a hot planet with agresssive sentinels predators and hot weather.
