Review:
Following on from the first book being amazing, Open Heart: Book 2, follows much of the same quality. First, the LI’s. This book gives a great amount of screentime to Ethan, Bryce, and sometimes Jackie, but poor Rafael often is shafted in my opinion. Add on to that Sora, an irrelevant character whose sole purpose is…to bail on Rafael after Raf nearly died? I love Aurora in this book, even with the brief spat she and M/C get into, and I love how much she’s developed since Book 1. Being on the diagnostics team is really fun, and I liked seeing all the various patients and cases and the drama that inevitably came with each one. Esme and the other interns are fun characters, and I like how Esme’s situation with Levi partially mirrors M/C’s situation the previous year with Mrs. Martinez. However, I wish the book had delved more into euthanasia, and the controversy and debate surrounding it. I love how M/C and friends casually take down a whole pharmaceutical company lol, that was a fun chapter. The main plot of Edenbrook losing funding is well done. I like how all the side storylines converge onto the ever-looming threat of Edenbrook shutting down, such as the lawsuit against Esme, or Kyra’s job. Speaking of Kyra, she was very enjoyable in this book. The segment with Danny and Bobby’s deaths was so tragic, I nearly cried, although I’m ashamed to admit it. Bobby was less emotional, since we only meet him in this book. Danny, though? We knew him since Book 1, and he was teased as a potential new LI for Sienna, so his death is that much more impactful. Why couldn’t Travis have taken out Marlene or Sarah instead? WHY DANNY? All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and since the first two books in this series have been so lovely, surely the third will follow, right? ....right?
