Concrete

Poem

The metal railings

Feel the metal fingers

The wires and circuits that maketh man

The purity of child tainted by us

The schools and our educational systems

A Dictator, a tyrant

Built to think that is socially acceptable

That truths have been buried in the rain

People afraid of the water

Mathematics textbooks and literature analysis

The Culpability clear who

Caring only for Injustices when they happen to us

Preaching of redemption and charitable nature

Rhetoric spewed from mouths

That have never faced any actualities

Protected with blankets of non-concern

Making thoughts without thinking

Demented and solved

Driven insane by senseless hours

Upon senseless days

For a senseless piece of paper

Telling you to fuck yourself

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Love the even spacing dynamic; it makes the poem feel like a steady stream of vent thoughts pouring out of the frustration of the author.

are you going for a King James feel with the maketh? perhaps commit to the language, i think it would add a lot to the rest of the poem

Thanks, nah I was just thinking of a word to string them together and that's what I put

I'm going start by addressing the elephant in the room: "maketh" is the wrong choice here. Not only is it archaic in a way that isn't reflected elsewhere in the poem, it's also incorrect. The -eth ending only comes on third-person singular, not plural. One thing maketh man; two things make man.

The vitriol and emotion of this poem feel very raw and real, and I appreciate that. The language, "maketh" nothwithstanding, is both elevated and grounded, and that's a hard balance to strike. I see that you're a Bukowski fan-- maybe that's an echo of his voice coming through.

I feel like "Concrete" is a bit of an ironic title for the poem, since there is very little concrete in it. Most of your ideas are quite abstract with nothing immediate or sensory to hook onto. The sentiments themselves aren't particularly fresh, which in combination with the paucity of concrete imagery means that there's very little to explore or connect with here. It just kind of rolls past like political screed. I think if you want to take this poem to the next level, you need to focus in on an idea or metaphor that captures what you're trying to say, and really dig into the personal experience of it.

Thanks for sharing your work, and best of luck on your next drafts.

Thanks, I prefer not to edit my poems much I see them more as releases and only make small adjustments, I just like to write another and another. Honesty is appreciated, I wasn't trying to be political which im surprised it came across that way. Also I'm not sure on metaphors I just want to write it simple. Thansk for the input.
