A Wreath of Plastic Lilies
As I drove today I saw
a wreath of plastic lilies.
Neath the overpass
bound to stone alas
for a moment in it all
stood tall as Achilles.
I'd seen it so before,
below the cars that roar,
a thousand times or more
that wreath of plastic lilies.
Over many, many years
The road had often crumbled
torn apart, then let to wilt
and soon to be rebuilt,
but hidden there, a mothers tears
her sobs, quiet and humble.
Those lilies remain below,
despite it all I know.
They stayed there still though
the road had often crumbled
I wondered then
the fool I'd been
What kept those lilies there?
surely not just a metal wire.
That too would've fade,
or it's winding splayed,
so what, and from where
still held those lilies higher?
I get now, the mother did.
for years from me that hid.
The mothers' love had never crumbled,
her Will stood tall as Achilles.
She kept it there, with sobs still mumbled
that wreath of plastic lilies.
