No one knows how electricity works.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?
You know, Insane Clown Posse get shit on constantly for that line, but I wonder how many people actually know how magnets work. Can someone explain it to me? Like, you have a piece of metal and then a second piece of metal and they pull each other together—why?
Ugh, what a fucking blowhard. We get it, Feynman, you're very clever—now answer the fucking question. He spent several minutes talking and his explanation boils down to "I have no idea."
Lol agreed. I think that though boils down most of humanity's questions. How does gravity work?
(take what I am saying with a grain of salt since I am combining a science textbook I read a couple years ago and the wiki page on magnetism)
Certain metals have a lopsided amount of electrons which means that the atoms themselves has one side with more electrons and one side with less electrons. the atoms in a piece of metal will on average cancel each other out but when they come in contact with magnetized metal the atoms are all redirected to point in the same direction. If enough of the atoms in an object are pointing in the same direction the object will gain a magnetic field strong enough to keep them pointing in that direction.
You're mostly correct, except it's the spin of the electrons that causes magnetism. Electrons in metal are delocalised, which means they float around the entire piece of metal instead of orbiting one particular nucleus. Metals which react to magnets do not have filled outer electron shells, which means there is an odd number of electrons. Each electron has the properties of a tiny little magnet where the direction of the magnetic field is determined by the quantum mechanical spin of the electron. If the electrons are all spinning in the same direction, their dipole moments line up and combine, turning the whole piece of metal into a magnet and having an odd number means the field cannot be entirely cancelled out by electrons pointing the opposite way. There are many, many more details—this is just the extent of my knowledge.
My question, though, is what is it that makes the electrons repel like tiny magnets and what is it that pushes or pulls the second piece of metal? What prevents you from pushing together two repelling magnets? I understand that magnetism is a function of quantum mechanical spin of the electrons and only certain substances have the physical properties and configuration necessary to bring forth this phenomenon, but it still doesn't explain what the phenomenon even is, really.
The biggest issue seems to be that with a force like electromagnetism its easy to explain the various effects and even the math that it follows. But proper examination of any fundamental force would require a control group where physics is not already built around that force.
I had to watch this whole "movie" at work (The Secret). A coworker presented it as motivational. The whole thing is ludicrous, but this is where I just couldn't hold my laughter anymore and snorted in disbelief.
I was watching this on Amazon Prime and spit out a drink, this whole film is drowning in woo.
Who would have thought that a bunch of egomaniacs would believe that the circumstances that lead them to prosperity were not circumstantial at all , but a direct result of their ability to manifest events through thought?

And gravity was sitting right there! C'mon man!
Idk there seems to be a key floating in mid air.
Sorry. Floating right there.
Electricity is tiny demons running through the cables with miniature batteries.
Could I get a transcript? Thx.

Or just don't want to play it out loud when I don't live alone. Just saying.
A tough existence I am sure, good luck getting a moment away!
