Steam deck needs a GEForce like “Optimal settings” config option..

I've heard and seen plenty that GeForce is kind of crap when it comes to optimizations....and then something like this happening. One of my friends went through with this on I think MHRise or Lost Ark at one point during a MP session.

Steam Deck already attempts to do so on verified games last I checked, but it's hit or miss still. It be great to have something for people not too savvy on some options, but I say always leave it up to the user to find what they want/prefer.

I always said they should have a community driven gameprofile feature.

People that enjoy it can go in testing settings and then list what they achieved (720p 40fps 800p 30fps etc) and people can then select them and rate them if they work well.

Allows people to get a little bit of recognition for testing best settings and really helps the people that want a faster 'console' experience.

Might be hard to do on old games, but if valve pushes for new ones to have this functionality it would probably push devs into retroactively implementing it if they make it easy.

I know you can just look on the Internet blablabla, but devices like this succeed on the mainstream predominantly because of usability and it would really help attract those often daunted by settings menus.

That would be phenomenal if switching graphics profiles was as easy as swapping out controller configs.

Thinking about it for configs that are not obfuscated or compressed.

Valve could easily provide for steam deck users to opt in to share their settings when a game is played, which would also sample TDP, FPS, etc.. several times before making the report.

A simple averaging using 'mode' could determine what settings are best collectively from the submissions. (if you wanted to get fancy you could weight them to clusters submissions with similar settings together to determine 'tiers')

This would be as close to full automation as possible, would not require manual work, weeds out anyone using 'trolling' setups as they'd get weeded out as outliers by sheer dint of numbers.

and could then publish the top 3 used profiles, graded by average TDP, FPS, whatever the perf monitor can spit out.

You can disable the overlay for geforce experience.

Geforce optimal settings usually suck, tho.

Because it's taking a "Best guess" at near infinite numbers of hardware combinations.

Steam Deck is a fixed ecosystem. Much easier to fit a fixed profile to.

I treated them as starting points when I used GeForce cards. They’re rarely what I’d actually want unless it was a low end game maxed out, and were often outright laughable once the card got old enough that they’d trash new game settings far more than actually necessary, probably to goad you into upgrading.

Optimal for what? The UI? Or optimal for each of the 50000+ games?

9
jasonridesabike•

I think it's a great idea and much easier to accomplish in an ecosystem that all shares the same specs.

Is this a game specific setting? Steam level?

Does anyone actually use the GeForce recommended settings?

1
sekoku512GB - Q3•

Nah, that shit isn't accurate at all and half the time their settings aren't the best.

Neat idea, but the best way of getting optimizations is user reporting on ProtonDB or the like (Steam Reviews?) that gives a general consensus to where the end-user is able to make the tweaks themselves and agree/disagree on the changes as needed.

I'd like to see developers support this as well, at least as a starting point. They probably don't want to spend too much time optimizing the game for a small percentage of players, but having a "Deck Optimized" preset in graphics options would be nice.

1
ahintoflime•

Nah. Setting are very personal. I like native res and 60fps but am happy to have everything on low, where some people might like 40fps and FSR but settings on high etc. It's good how it is!

1
Xacktastic•

Uh, you're shooting yourself in the foot using GeForce to optimize your games. It's a pretty terrible system. There is no way they can accurately optimize for the millions of pc hardware combos. You're way better off just using an fps counter and 10minutes to optimize yourself, instead.

Could be a good option for steam deck, though, as it's basically a console with a closed ecosystem of parts.

With standardized hardware now, this would be great. Players opt in to send settings and performance data back to Steam. Steam displays maybe the a performance and quality setting for each game. User can loads those and tinker from there.

And for everyone crapping on GeForce optimization, I get it. We can still support this idea while acknowledging that having a similar feature for Steam Deck would be awesome.

Does anyone even use those geforce optimal settings? :U

I like the idea, but I would need options. I configure my Steam Deck in a way that the fan doesn’t get too crazy. So I‘d like profiles that reflect quality and noise harassment: „silent“ (low), „audible“ (medium), „jet-engine“ (I can’t handle this)

It does that by default in the steam api, some games just don't work

Fuck that.

For those that don't like to tinker. Sure. I probably won't use it.

-1
doomguy12345666512GB - Q3•

Or you can spend 30 seconds changing the graphics settings.

-2†
datGryphon•

For some games this can be a time consuming process. I probably spent a solid 30 minutes or more finding the right configs for my preferences on GTA V because half of the video settings require a restart between changes. I'm not saying that GeForce is perfect, it usually gets you 80+ percent of the way there, close enough that tweaking the GeForce settings is a lot faster then starting from scratch.

V45H256GB - Q2•

I honestly just set everything to medium and went on playing just fine

7
datGryphon•

Totally, I don't mean that what I searching for configs to make GTA V playable, that is the case without having to mess with anything really.

I spent some time fiddling with the shader qualities, fxaa, msaa and anisotropic AA filtering along with the render distances for shadows and entities to get the user experience I prefer.

I.e. I was playing around with maximizing the image quality, minimizing blur and maintaining smooth 45-60 fps gameplay even in the more computationally demanding potions of gameplay. I had some personal issues with the default graphics that the game installs with when it gets squished down onto the 800p screen. In particular, the lighting and reflections are too sharp/grainy for me to not get distracted by them, and FXAA just adds too much blur when you're moving or turning quickly, which further inhibits your ability to see things at a distance on the small screen.

EusisAX•

Lol, like any of us spend that little time playing with graphical settings. It’s at least a few minutes, then going back and tweaking after playing awhile, and so on and so forth.

Nevermind when settings reset on you, I swear I keep turning off AA on Elden Ring then it goes back to High when I play again.

2
delecti64GB - Q1•

Are you playing on multiple computers? Some games will cloud sync settings in addition to saves.

2
EusisAX•

It’s what I’ve done, but I hadn’t played Elden Ring on my desktop since getting a Steam Deck, especially since I already beat it on PS and mostly wanted this for portability.

2
Wit_as_a_Riddle512GB - Q3•

What are graphics settings?

-console guy

Settings?

-potential customers

1
delecti64GB - Q1•

Seriously. Most games already have a "figure out the best configs for me" option, which is usually fine. And for the ones that don't, how much trouble is it really? I've spent a couple hundred hours playing on my Steam Deck, and at most 5 minutes of that was messing with graphics settings.

-1
Beautiful_Sport5525512GB - Q1 2023•

Actually. No, it doesn't.

-2†
EatingMold512GB•

X - doubt.

What people need is understanding that this is a handheld and higher graphics quality = lower battery life.

Which is not an issue most of the time, since there's a power plug nearly everywhere.

And if there isn't powerbanks are a thing...

TheSweeney•

I’d love to see games on PC have verified Steam Deck settings presets in the settings menus. Have a couple different options even:

  1. Steam Deck Performance: targets 60fps
  2. Steam Deck Quality: targets 30 or 40fps at higher settings and resolution
  3. Steam Deck Power Saver: designed to get the most battery life without massive quality/frame rate sacrifices.

Keep the ability to customize the settings as users see fit, but having steam deck presets would be a great step to making the experience simpler for less savvy users.

4
datGryphon•

Cyberpunk tried to do this, but akaik it is still broken and the "steam deck” preset is basically just the same as the high settings, which is way to intense for the deck to actually handle.

2
TheSweeney•

Yeah. I’d hope developers would implement it in a way that worked obviously, but it would be a nice way to make the process of getting games going on Deck even simpler for the layman.
