Isekai Campaign Session 6
Previously on The Goddess Of Fate Summoned Us To Another World To Be Her Champions, But She Won't Tell Us What To Do!:
Four Japanese High School students were hit by a truck and brought to a magical world by Bruni, the Goddess of Fate to be her champions. Shortly after arriving, they saved the daughter of Kashar, the village blacksmith from goblins in a dungeon. While attempting to report the new dungeon to the Adventurer's guild, they were brushed off because they weren't registered adventurers yet. They registered as adventurers and brought a more experienced adventurer, Pezel the cat woman, to supervise the dungeon inspection. After killing some goblins in the dungeon, they emerged to find four men in mages robes facing them.
Our heroes:
- Sato - carries a katana and dreams of being a samurai
- Tobe - carries a bow and enjoys tracking and sneaking
- Okita - has two companion animals, a spark rabbit named Yokai-chan and a wind hawk named Riku-chan, and enjoys the creepy things
- Akuto - wannabe gangster who talks with his fists
Tonight's session:
The mages blasted Pezel with lightning magic to put her down first, then faced the PCs. The main muscle, Sato and Akuto were paralyzed from the lightning attacks at first, until Yokai-chan's spark tackles and Riku-chan's wind blasts dispersed them enough. Then Sato, Akuto, and Tobe made short work of them. Akuto lost consciousness from a lightning blast after pummeling one to death. Sato got two of them with her katana. Tobe was going to leave the last one alive, until it hit Yokai-chan point blank with his lightning blast.
While searching the bodies, they found that each mage had a particular mark tattooed on him. Tobe followed their tracks to their horses, and as dead men don't need horses, each took one. In one of the saddlebags they found a letter with the same mark as the mages' tattoos. It was from the guildmaster, saying that he had delayed the reporting of the dungeon as best he could, but they would have to kill the adventurers and Kashar the blacksmith to prevent knowledge of it leaking out. The PCs rushed to Kashar's house to find the whole village up and about, some thatched roofs on fire, and a bloody Kashar holding a greatsword and surrounded by six dead men in robes (the PCs were reminded that he was a former adventurer).
They showed Kashar the letter, and he recognized the symbol as that of the Cult of the Demon Lord, who seek to restore the demon lords to their rule over the land. He asked them to go with Pezel to subdue the guildmaster and possibly the mayor (who was the one who appointed the current guildmaster) and bring them to the magistrate with the evidence to face justice.
That night, Sato sat outside and tried to gather her thoughts about killing a human for the first time. Kashar recognized how she looked and offered some perspective from his time as an adventurer. Tobe also helped to comfort her.
Lessons:
- You can make up plot points as you go along, but take note of them. I came up with the idea for the tattoo while they were searching the bodies. Because of course cultists would have a tattoo. I told them I would come up with what it actually looks like later.
- If you want to have a letter in the story, write the letter ahead of time. (I did not)
- If you don't have it written ahead of time, it's okay to ask your players to wait a moment while you write it down rather than speak it extemporaneously. Fortunately, they weren't too bored because I had just given them some new horses.
- Ask them to describe details of the world. I asked them to describe what color each of their horses were. They had fun deciding what each looked like. While they were doing that and coming up with names for their horses, I composed the letter.
- Short sessions are ok, especially if you're over Discord. I hear about other people getting together for four hour sessions. Our session only lasted two hours, which is fine because we can't start until a certain time, and at least one of us gets too tired after too long. We use Discord because we're in three different states. I imagine that if you drive to someone's house, you want to be able to stay a while, but if you're just logging on, a short session is fine. All we were able to do today was fight these mages and talk to Kashar, but they still had fun.
- Don't rush from point to point; ask your players if they have anything else to do before the scene change. You can get some good role-playing out of that.
