Ryan is kind of an asshole

I'm on season 3 right now episode 8, I haven't watched this show since I was a kid so a lot of things are pretty fresh to me on the rewatch. The most annoying thing ever during this current arc is the fact that legitimately Johnny and Marissa are just friends who talk about their trauma...and everyone is getting involved and misunderstanding shit and trying to convince Marissa that Johnny is SO in love with her despite them just being like normal friends (as of right now, cant remember if he's actually in love with her, I have a vague recollection of what happens). Ryan is making such a big fucking deal about Marissa having friends at her new school that at this point its freaking insufferable. He is being very controlling and honestly looking at it from a 2022 viewpoint it's pretty creepy.

Also the fact that they are all making a big deal about Marissa not wanting to go to college despite the fact that a) she cant afford it, b) legitimately doesn't want to. At the point I'm at in the episode Johnny and friend just asked her if she'd be open to travelling the world with their surfing tour and like hell ya why would you not want to, College isn't everything. I realize that in 2005 not going to college was a huge deal but it's just soooo annoying and I needed to vent.

Marissa is a very vulnerable character and gets taken advantage of very quickly by almost everyone. Ryan knows this. Also, after what happened with Oliver, well, Ryan has every right to be worried about Marissa, especially with completely new people. Also, Ryans feelings were right about absolutely everything. He's a street kid so his intuition is generally right most of the time.

This is very true, Ryan pretty much called it immediately with Oliver but as of episode 8 I don't think Johnny's done anything to deserve being put on Ryan's shit list.

nah johnny is good people and ryan knows it. but he also knows how easy it is for someone to fall for Marissa quickly, and thats what Ryan is concerned about. Remember as I said earlier, Ryans Intuition about things are generally right. I won't spoil anything for you but Johnny is good people, and Ryan knows that. Wait till Volchock is introduced lol

Marissa is like honey to all the boys of Orange County, immediate obsession. The story is on the periphery of my memory but for the life of me I don't remember what happens, I know Kaitlyn is re introduced and starts stirring the pot and hanging around Johnny. When I started watching again and Trey was introduced I misremembered what happened and thought Marissa dated/murdered him. What a twist.

Uh… yeah… this is not the correct take.

Keep watching.

Lol, I'm waiting to be proven wrong. I know child me hated Johnny I just don't remeber why.

You must be on crack. Ryan has every reason to be upset at Marissa. After all the crap she's pulled and lets not forget, after Johnny unalived himself, Marissa told him "You're glad he's dead". Most people would have straight up walked after that.

SonyaSpawnOP•

I know he was right in season one but as of season three Marissa has literally no friends at her new school and makes a friend who she can actually talk to, idk I feel like as of right now Ryan is being a dick. Also this is coming from someone who can't stand Marissa.

Ryan had zero qualms abt Marissa making friends. What he was weary of was the kind of shit she was used to getting into and literally everything he said, predicted or called out on, came true.

SonyaSpawnOP•

I don't know if he had zero quams about her making friends everytime they pan back to ryans face after seeing Marissa with her new friends he looks like he's suffering. He says he doesn't mind her hanging out with her new friend but he very obviously does. I know he's very protective of Marissa and just wants to protect her but it kind of comes of as controlling, when he barrels into her school dance, her friends party, johnnys surf tournament, to basically confront her and accusing her of various things.

I mean she did lie to Ryan the night of the dance, she said she was studying, and Summer called him to come to the party. He didn’t just show up on his own. And her new friends seems to really be just this one guy who is in love with her.

Nah, Ryan’s instincts are always on point. Marissa is naive, oblivious, and way too trusting, and it usually doesn’t end well. Not that Johnny was a horrible guy, but Ryan was right. Don’t even get me started on how terribly the writers treated her character. Just dumped all the drama and trauma on her 🙄

Nah no way! I don’t wanna spoil anything as you haven’t seen it in a while but he definitely tries! I can’t imagine anyone thinking Ryan is more insufferable than Johnny. Again don’t want to spoil much but Johnny is a pos. Now could Ryan have handled situations better like her ptsd after what happened with Trey? Most definitely! But I do not agree with this take. Keep watching, the only 2 people I couldn’t stand on this show were Johnny and Rebecca from season 2… 🤢

I know as a kid I hated Johnny, tbh I'm waiting for the shoe to drop so we shall see.

Did you completely miss the Oliver storyline? He has every reason to be upset with her.

Bojarzin•

Let's be real, almost every relationship in the show is based on distrust and jealousy. Shows are written as they are, of course, but Ryan and Marissa break up a dozen times for the same shit constantly, if they come to a point where her making a friend at school is an issue, they shouldn't be together

5
daxattak•

It wasnt about her making a friend. Ryan was okay with their friendship at first. The fiirst time he saw Johnny, Marissa was crying in the corner, of course he was gonna try to protect her! He apologized for that. Johnny was in love with her and she was oblivious to it. Even when JOHNNY tells her to stay away, she doesnt. She clearly has no respect for their wishes and just wants to do whatever Marissa wants to do. Ryan never seemed to be enough for her and it's a solid reason why to be upset. He wasnt "a messed up kid from Chino" anymore so she finds the next fucked up guy to cling on to.

Bojarzin•

I don't necessarily disagree. Though for what it's worth, I think Marissa is a poorly written character. In terms of their history, Ryan is probably right to be worried, but that also means he shouldn't be with her. I think it might be because The OC rushes into the next drama every time one wraps up, but I've never seen anything that made me feel like Ryan and Marissa even liked each other lol

daxattak•

Alright, this is probably the most accurate comment out there. Just finished a rewatch and you couldn't be more right

2
Isoturius•

Lol, yeah...

That's a no from me dawg.

Just wait until later. Ryan's gut is always right on about that stuff. Marissa is straight up oblivious to things and it always has terrible consequences.

12
SonyaSpawnOP•

Yes Marissa is very questionable in pretty much all her life choices, like I know she dates(??) Volchok, can't for the life of me remember how or why but as of where I am in the show Johnny still seems like an ok yet sad boy floppy haired dude who's surfing career is basically ruined. Other than Marissa spending more time with Johnny I dont know why Ryan feels so threatened. Im just waiting and anticipating for Johnnys downfall (literally).

I was with you up until the surf tour thing. That’s a bit of a weird thing to contemplate with two random guys you’ve just met.

Johnny, unlike Oliver, is actually a really decent guy though for most of the early parts of that season.

One of the weird parts of those episodes is that Ryan seems so old by comparison. Johnny’s and his friends seem sort of believable for their age, but Ryan looks so out of place whenever he’s with them. Anyone else notice that?

10
SonyaSpawnOP•

This is almost exactly what my boyfriend said, he was like why would they invite this girl they just met like two weeks ago on a world tour.

I said the age thing as well! Johnny looks just like my friend did in highschool, short hair ryan looks about 30.

1
theflowersyoufind•

Yeah, Johnny’s whole style is very mid noughties. I was a teen then and he looks like people I hung out with…albeit a lot better looking. Ryan looks like someone’s Dad!

1
Moreaccurateway•

Ryan was going through his own trauma. His brother tried to kill him and then his brother neither died when Marissa shot him.

Marissa had no time for his trauma or how he dealt with his. He had to be there for her while going through his own stuff.

Thats the ultimate problem with Marissa she uses guys for her own self worth.

Walkingthegarden•

I think Ryan was perfectly trusting. He give Johnny a lot of birth and actually handles things respectfully. Unfortunately its a situation thats hard to navigate at any age much less some their age. Love triangles are hard but they can be managed.

I do sympathise with Marissas need to vent and talk about their trauma and Ryan just shuts her down. But I never understood why she had to confide in a new, random guy (yet again) and she was clearly being naive about Johnnys feelings (yet again). That storyline was so done at that point.
