Who knows anything about taps(Faucets), Because I obviously did something stupid and I don't know how to fix it

So basically I decided to take off the top part of my garden tap, well because I wanted to know how that part worked. I think what I thought would happen was that I would be able to take the one from fresh water tap and put it on the recycled water tap(because Silly builders didn't give us a key to turn the recycled water tap).

anyway, I tried putting the top of the tap back on and it just doesn't stop the water any more. does any one know the right way to do this.

I've already googled a few things but can't come up with a resolution that I need, I think I just don't know the technical names of what I have done...

I don't know much about this but I suspect you lost a spring without noticing.

So, you're not alone here--I was painting my bathroom and decided to caulk around the flange on the shower faucet handle. The flange screwed onto the pipe coming out of the wall so I thought I'd just unscrew it and caulk behind it. It turned easy enough, but it turned out I was loosening the entire faucet without noticing. I took the faucet and full force water right in the chest. And, I lost a spring.

Thanks a whole bunch that was it... I was getting pretty worried and thirsty about the whole thing... I was just completely perplexed by what exactly had gone wrong as I thought that I should be able to put the two pieces back together with out thinking about it, turns out I was wrong... I also got extremely wet when I made this mistake because I forgot that I could turn the houses water off so i Just kept on trying to put it back on while all this water was rushing into my face... I hope that Image is enough reward for helping me out

Just from searching, no expert here...Looks like the pictured piece is the sill cock flange. It's possible that the washer may have been damaged. Hopefully you can take another look to see if that'll help. I started from here as well, in case that helps at all.
