Poem

Songbirds

There was a small cage inside my heart

Made out of twigs and twine

And grey leaves and green moss and flowers color of wine

The bars so thin it couldn’t hold anything captive

And with a swing, so lovely, it had everything you shall need to live

There was a songbird inside the cage

And it was blue and yellow and red

Didn’t matter the hue if you heard how it sang

And there were fireflies floating above its head

Lighting up the place, the little songbird’s shed

And there the bird would sing, inside the cage, inside my heart

Its melodies of joy and hope and memories from the past

I would listen and laugh and cheer and dance

We lived together, the bird and I, as friends

Then the double man came

With his fat callous hands

His duplicitous smile and his well-hidden lies

Said he wanted a peak at my little songbird

Maybe hear just a song and that’d be over

But he reached out his paws as he knew he shouldn’t

The songbird stopped singing and frightened, took its flight

So the man went away, said it’d been just a game

But the bird was now gone and without its musings

The lightbugs flickered and the flowers withered

There was a sad cage inside my heart

And I lived alone, waiting for a friend to come back

Luckily there was you, there had always been you

You had seen the whole thing but you couldn’t believe

You were quite positive that the bird would come back

No need to lay a trap, just follow the right track

You helped me in my quest to get the songbird home

In its cage, in my heart, to resume singing songs

The both of us we worked getting the cage back in shape

You were good with the knots, had the twine firmly laced

We picked up new flowers and new leaves and fresh moss

Made the cage so pretty we had fireflies a lot

Just missed my colorful songbird to give life to these parts

There was a hopeful cage in my heart

And I lived with you as I lived with my bird, friends forever endeavour

There was a small cage inside your heart

In all shapes and manners identical to mine

There was a songbird inside you cage too

And it had the most beautiful hymns to sing for you

The bird followed your lead, if you are sad, be sad, if you are mad, be mad

And il you are happy, let everybody see

You lived in harmony, your little bird and you

Getting to know the bumps and puddles that might lay on your path

But there is this one thing that neither you or I nor any bird did know

That fate in its blind rage has the tricks most cruel

And in just one second, your bird, your cage, your heart were crushed

Nothing to do, nothing to say, it just had all been lost

As I witnessed all this my heart shook and my little cage crumbled

And I sat there speechless wondering what you would do

There is a giant hole inside my heart

And I live without you, without my bird and without friends

And only you could’ve made this story end well

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. Thank you for sharing. This is a beautiful, heartbreaking and resonant piece. I feel your emotions from fullness to despair to hope to desperation to relief and back to loss, and I connect to them all and I think many would as well. I like your freedom with how you rhyme at some places and don't at others, however I think a bit more of a method to the rhyme scheme would help create a better rhythm when reading it. If you haven't yet, try reading it out loud to see how the meter sounds off the tongue. I love the metaphor of the songbird –– a familiar one yet you made it your own and gave it new meaning with the idea of companionship and likening it to a sense of inner peace that we can lose and find again. I hope you keep writing!

Some line edits:

And with a swing, so lovely, it had everything you shall need to live"- this line could be worded in a smoother way, i think "shall" is not the right word

And I lived alone, waiting for a friend to come back - maybe say "the bird" instead of "a friend"

friends forever endeavour - love this play on words
