heaven.
when i died, i came to heaven.
i don’t know how;
there must have been a mixup upstairs.
regardless, i’m here.
and it’s awful.
//
it’s too bright, first of all.
when god built his kingdom in the sky,
he should have realized how high it would be.
there’s no clouds above us,
and the sun shines unimpeded.
i should have gotten skin cancer by now,
but there’s some sort of magic
keeping everyone pure and white.
the sun reflects off of the ground
and our clothes
and our wings
and our buildings.
my eyes are forever filled with colored spots.
//
it’s also really quiet here.
there’s less air up here,
since we’re so high in the atmosphere,
so sound doesn’t travel as far.
and the little sound that does move
gets absorbed by the air in the clouds
like on a snowy day.
the only noise comes from people speaking,
but only the newcomers speak.
after you’re here for a few months,
you lose yourself to the magic.
//
you know what happens to heroin addicts?
they shoot up for the first time,
and it feels really good,
so they keep doing it.
but after a while,
it doesn’t feel as good.
their body builds up a tolerance to it,
so they shoot up more and more and more
until they stop breathing and die.
it’s like that up here,
but without the dying part.
//
after a while,
you get so blissed out
that you can barely move
and you can only talk in whispers and mumbles
that the others somehow understand
because they’re there too.
we’re all zombies up here,
feeding off of the magic
and the sunlight
and the wind
and the awesome power of the lord.
there’s nothing to do
but lay there in your little dreamland.
//
i’m sure down in hell
they have cities full of people
and drugs with unimaginable side effects
and whores with every disease under the sun
and gangs that fight over millimeters of land
and black markets for locally grown vegetables.
it sounds like fun.
//
but this,
up here,
in heaven:
this is hell.
