What is a good designer shoulder bag for under $500?

I want to get a gift for my girlfriend. She has a shoulder bag (or purse?) that she uses because it’s convenient for her. It’s not very large and she can wear the strap across her chest.

I’m honestly somewhat out of my element. Does anyone here have any advice? :) thank you!

Firstly you're talking about a crossbody, a shoulder bag hangs straight down off the shoulder and doesn't go across the chest.

Second, legit traditional designer will not be found new for 500$ or less. Perhaps try something like Polène, Coach, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Opelle... without details on what she actually likes and with the clear misunderstanding of what she's actually wearing its impossible to say more.

Ok I’ll ask her! I know things like Chanel run in the thousands but that’s a bit excessive for me. Granted I do think Chanel holds its value from what I’ve heard? Maybe that’s a gift for her if we marry. But until then certainly not comfortable paying that much.

Thanks for the info I was so unsure what the proper terminology was for that type of bag. I think polene works. I.e. I don’t think it HAS to be one of the super pricey designer bags. She’s pretty frugal and would likely not appreciate the price tag. Doubt she’d even understand why I spent so much on a bag lol.

Get her the Polene. Good quality, no obnoxious logos. It's more of an IFYKYK item.

I hear the quality is substantially lower now though. Have you heard this?

No, but TBH I don't own a Polene bag. I like Celine and Loewe for subtle, tasteful bags, but they are going to run you a lot more than $500.

You OPs alt or something? You've never been active in this community before and jumped in to restate a comment and fight with someone giving actual advice bc you took umbrage with the tone of a helpful comment to someone who couldn't do the most basic bit of research?

Edit ah deleted so, yes, assuming OPs alt. Lmao. OP, just do some research, check what brand her current bags are and if theyre all leather/cloth/generic shape and buy something similar.

For an example - my fiance likes scotch. I do not and know nothing about it. To buy him scotch, i look at what he currently has and note the flavour profiles and distilleries. Then I ask "looking for something smoky and sweet, not seeming to enjoy peaty but salt is ok, he has a lot of glenfidditch but looking for something less readily available in canada, around 100$". What I dont do is try to buy him brandy bc its also brown.

Coach and Tory Burch make cute leather crossbody bags and shoulder bags. But can you ask your girlfriend what SPECIFIC things that she likes about her purse? For example, brands; style; materials; colors. Know these information before you buy any purse. Because very likely she has a certain style in her mind and you might not get it right.

Honestly I’d recommend taking her shopping for it. For something like a daily bag, especially on the higher price/designer end, it’s really crucial it’s something you know for sure the person will love. Do you have any of those malls that have several different designer brick and mortar shops? That would be fun to take her to. Or online window shopping is always an option!

I will never stop talking about how wonderful Strathberry bags are! They’re in your price range, and beautifully, beautifully made

Portland leather company makes beautiful and well made pieces, if that's the style you're into. I've got their $200ish tote and it's held up well and is wearing in beautifully. No complaints.

Brief note- I would really, really encourage you to either ask her opinion on this or look closely at the bag she uses now. I'm also a small crossbody bag type of girl and it's specifically because I hate toting around to much junk. I also would have no use for a bag without a key pocket on the front, etc. A bag is a hard thing to get for someone!

If you are sure you want to surprise her, get something with an easy return policy and let her know right away you're fine with trading it out if she needs something different.

Good luck :)

I think I’ll go with that return option. I really do want to surprise her! I was looking at the strathberry east west mini in navy burgundy and cream. What do you think?

Super classy! I like the pocket separation on the inside, and I think the bag could be dressed up or down depending on her outfit. I also like the understated logo, Strathberry is a good brand and the bag will still look in style in 10 or 20 years. Good pick!

Do you know if she wears gold or silver? My only note is if she's exclusively a silver jewelry wearer she might not want prominent gold hardware on her bag.

She has gold earrings that she wears very often. They’re hoop earrings.

I’m on the verge of buying it but my only remaining concern is if the chain would be too uncomfortable? Perhaps this bag could be more of a late fall into early spring bag? I just don’t want her to get uncomfortable. Though if we’re out together I sometimes carry her bag for her.

I’m really happy you like it though! Thanks so much for your help!

You're welcome! If it turns out the chain is slightly uncomfortable, you can buy what is basically tiny snap on padding in a color that matches the bag! Searching "leather chain strap pad" will get you more options then you know what to do with

I'd say buy the bag!
