Friend has no personality
And I don’t mean that she’s boring- just that it’s extremely difficult for her to have any opinion of her own. She only knows how to repeat what she’s heard from friends, significant other, social media. It’s not her fault- I do believe part of it is her upbringing and trouble with self confidence. We’ve even had discussions about how that could have affected her lack of opinion. I haven’t been able to help, and the best I’ve suggested is therapy to deal with the traumas that lead to this. However, therapy is not something she’s interested in enough.
Because of this I’ve felt increasingly strained in our conversations- it seems one sided since we can’t have a genuine discussion. I end up taking a therapist role because wants help separating her opinion from what others have said. I can’t go to her for advice or to discuss random topics for which an opinion is needed. She can’t even make up her mind about clothes unless she’s seen an influencer wear that exact outfit before. I want to remain friends, but my patience is wearing thin.
So far my plan is to engage in less one on one hangouts so that the conversations can bounce off of more people, but we don’t have many mutual friends so that’s gonna be a slow process. Any other suggestions?
