Carrboro, NC: Day 1
(I will be writing an entry every day or so, depending on how much interest I get from them. I'm not the best of writers, but I have an imagination, and that is the best way to write effective fiction, I guess. Provide me with feedback and I'll fine-tune the story from my part of the country!)
Day 1:
Shit. So glad the internet is still working, though I can’t imagine how. At this point, the TV has been playing a solid image of a biohazard sign and the words “STATE OF EMERGENCY: SEEK SHELTER.” I don’t know if that is the US Government’s doing, though I guess the bureaucratic red tape would prevent the dissemination of important information, even if it meant the safety of Americans. It is really shitty out. It all happened a few days ago. I hear the breakout was in DC, but nobody really knows for certain. The first Z came to North Carolina a day later, and, within hours, all the major metropolitan areas were infected. Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, and even Chapel Hill. I was grocery shopping with my roommate—well… shopping doesn’t really cover it. We were stocking up, my roommate having been tipped-off by a friend in DC. It was an odd situation. I just moved into this apartment a week or two ago and barely know my roommate, but I guess there’s no time like the present to get to know her.
Driving back from Food Lion, we saw our first Z. Nothing too out of the ordinary from all my experience watching zombie movies and reading zombie literature. Faster than I had hoped, but not too fast. Faster than Romero, slower then the remake. Regardless, pulling into our apartment complex we saw that there were two or three across the street. We had to make it into a very fast unload. I, being the man that I am, grabbed as many grocery bags in one hand as humanly possible, got my roommate to do the same, and unloaded a full minivan in three trips. On the final trip, a Z got a hold of my roommate. I ran back to help her and kicked the head as hard as I could, knocking it backwards. I heard the neck snap and, while the head remained active, the body became relatively still. I hurried inside and bolted the door behind us. I saw some bleeding on my roommate’s leg. She insisted it was a scratch, I think otherwise. I’ve locked myself in my room, but with my baseball bat by the door. I’m really worried I am going to have a Z for a roommate, and I can’t imagine having to kill her, but I think I might have to…
