Review:

I do like the concept of this book, and the amount of effort that went into it can’t be denied. All of the songs are fully voice-acted, and that must have been expensive to do. The songs do sound good, if not a bit generic. However, I just found myself thinking that perhaps too much effort went into recording the songs and not enough into the actual book. M/C’s rise to fame is very sudden, her downfall is super predictable, and her redemption isn’t exactly astounding. The whole rivalry with Jaylen is interesting, but Jaylen is barely explored as a character, and the book is so fickle with what options you choose. Like, I did exclusively positive options the whole book, but because I said one negative thing once, I’m not on good terms with her? The love interests are good, I suppose. I love Raleigh, and Avery is sweet. Shane felt weird to me. Like, he’s your typical best friend character, but not one I would ever peg as becoming a LI. Also the fact that he ditches you towards the end regardless of whether you went to his film festival or not is ridiculous. Your “fan” count is useless, and doesn’t really impact much by the end. Also, as many of you know by now if you’ve read all these reviews, I despise books that are needlessly genderlocked. I understand that it would have been a lot of extra time and money to record male M/C’s vocals on top of everything else. However, I would have gladly taken no actual sound/voice acting if it means getting a male M/C. All in all, I don’t hate this book, but it just feels more like a container for the songs rather than a full-fledged book. The genderlock doesn’t really help things either. Meh.
