Isekai Campaign Session 7
Previously on The Goddess Of Fate Summoned Us To Another World To Be Her Champions, But She Won't Tell Us What To Do!:
Four Japanese High School students were hit by a truck and brought to a magical world by Bruni, the Goddess of Fate to be her champions. After defeating some lightning mages sent to kill them, they discover that the guildmaster not only sent the mages to kill him, but is in league with the Demon Lord cult, and they make plans to bring him to justice.
Our heroes:
- Sato - carries a katana and dreams of being a samurai
- Tobe - carries a bow and enjoys tracking and sneaking
- Okita - has two companion animals, a spark rabbit named Yokai-chan and a wind hawk named Riku-chan, and enjoys the creepy things
- Akuto - wannabe gangster who talks with his fists
Tonight's session:
On the way back to Bakri town, Pezel, the experienced adventurer supervising them, gave them a crash course in horse riding. When they got to Bakri, they asked about the local sheriff and discovered that he was in another village, so they decided to confront the guildmaster, Brod, themselves. At the guild office, they found the usual receptionist replaced by the thug that Tobe had thrown up on a couple days ago. He tried to give them the runaround, but when he tried to stop them from seeing the guildmaster, Akuto pinned him to the floor and choked him out.
They opened the guildmaster's office to find an empty office and an open window. Tobe and Sato went to find anyone who knows where the guildmaster went. Akuto interrogated the thug, Rool, while Okita watched. They discovered that Rool had the same tattoo that the Demon Lord cultists wore. He refused to talk about it. After Akuto removed a fingernail, he told them that Brod lived in a big house at the south end of town. He refused to give any details about his tattoo through a lot of enhanced interrogation, claiming "he'll kill me." When threatened with a broken jaw, he admitted it was from the Demon Lord, at which black lines spread from his tattoo and he convulsed and died.
Tobe and Sato discovered that the guildmaster had gone south towards his home. Akuto and Okita sent a message with Okita's hawk to the others, detailing what they found out.
Lessons:
- You can have a good session even without combat. We only had roleplay in tonight's short session, but everyone still had fun.
- A variety of situations can give opportunities for different characters to shine. This is the most roleplaying Akuto's player has done this entire campaign.
- Players can have a lot of fun doing unpleasant things. If they're not breaking game boundaries, these are good opportunities for roleplay.
- Make a list of everything you need to accomplish before the next session so you can be sure to get those things done on time. Though if you don't get them done, you might get lucky and not need them, but it's better to be prepared.
- Look up a list of the basic elements of a town, and write at least a few words about each element so you can refer to that in a moment. My players caught me flat-footed by asking about the sheriff, which I hadn't even thought of.
- Refer to your players when they have expertise you don't. People love to be the expert (if you listen to them).
- Edit: (I remembered one more thing) If your players attempt to solve a problem in a way you didn't expect, let them. I had expected them to find the location of the guildmaster by interrogating the thug, which they did. I did not expect two of them to keep trying to find him when I said there was no trail. They decided to ask around if anyone had seen him, so I let a fish vendor point the way.
