What ever happened to Intermissions?

After reading this thread, I started to wonder why more movies don't have intermissions. Why should audiences be expected to run out of the theater as fast as possible as to not miss anything important when they could take their time as the intermission screen stays on? Intermissions don't have to slow things down, they can act like an epic separator like in Ben-Hur.
