I want to get a puppy but I'm afraid it'll bark a lot when I'm at work and upset my neighbors...

I just moved out into an apartment and miss my dog (lives with my parents). I lived with a dog from age 10 to 26 and really miss having one around. I want to get a puppy but am afraid that it'll bark all the time when I'm not home and my neighbors will get pissed. My sister got a puppy when she moved out and it barked so much that her neighbor moved out. In the puppy's defense, my sister was probably a horrible trainer, if she tried to train it at all. We didn't have a problem with the two dogs I grew up with because they had each other for company and lived outside in our huge fenced in yard in a quiet, rural neighborhood. I guess I'm just looking for people who have a similar experience - live alone and work - and how they handled training a puppy. I've been reading a few of the PDF's on the sidebar and downloaded a couple more that I haven't started yet.
