Rape Culture: Definitions and perspectives?

So about two years ago, I was in a sociology class when a girl referenced 'rape culture'. I thought the phrase was strange, maybe a bit much, given that I live in a very liberal area. Rarely do I ever encounter instances of blatant misogyny. Since then, I've seen a lot of people on Reddit that are very fired up about the issue. If I could, I'd like to discuss the concept, your definitions, and your perspectives on its prevalence. I'm really just trying to gain an understanding and come to some objective conclusions.
