Pictures in r/Atheism

First off, I'm not too eloquent, so please forgive my wording in this post. I just feel this is important.

It is my opinion that the large amount of pictures being posted to r/Atheism is detracting from its quality of content and purpose. Many people have complained that this subreddit had declined to shallow comments against religion from once being a tremendous gathering of clear, open minded people striving for support and progress. I think that one of the main reasons for this is the prevalence of picture based posts to this subreddit.

Such posts usually contain little content, much of which could be equally expressed in a text post. Since picture posts contain little content they can, and usually are, tailored to achieve maximum karma. This negatively impacts the content posted since shorter, shallower, more offensive or sarcastic posts get more karma with less effort.

It is very tempting to do this, I have done this myself, but it hurts both our community's purpose and our public image. We ask for tolerance and open mindedness, but the majority of our posts are shallow and condescending.

What I suggest is that we have a separate subreddit for picture based posts while moving to exclude them from this one. This way, we can still have out fun/karma/etc. Without hurting this great subreddit. I have made a new subreddit http://www.reddit.com/r/AtheistPics (atheismpics was taken and is an empty subreddit) where any atheism related pictures can be posted. However, nobody will post to a desolate subreddit, so I ask everyone that agrees with this to subscribe and post to this new subreddit. I am personally going to delete my picture posts and move them there, and I ask of you to do the same. ( Or at least repost your posts to get the ball rolling)

Additionally, I currently don't have the slightest clue about moderating a subreddit, so I would be more than happy to make any willing atheists moderators.

Please respond with constructive criticism! Thank you for your time.
