I'm caught between a rock and a hard place, Reddit... Does anyone have any advice?
Hello Reddit,
I come to you with a problem that is eating me alive inside and I really don't know what to do. To start off, let me give you a little background on myself. I'm a 22-year-old mother with an 11 month old baby girl. I am currently living with my mom, 2 sisters (13 & 14), 1 brother (10) and my step-dad (it's kind of a big house, so we aren't as cramped as it might sound). I wasn't always a shit-bum living at home with my mom, I moved out at 18 and had to come back when things went to shit with my ex in November 2 years ago and surprise found out I was pregnant.
Anyway, my brother has signs of Asperger's, which is a form of autism. He has never been diagnosed, but I have done the research, and everything describes him to a T. He has always been like this as long as I can remember too. When he was a little younger, he would lay toy cars all over the living room floor. He'd have it fucking trashed. But blasphemy if you moved anything at all. If he sees it, he will start screaming to the high heavens, beating his face off of the wall, losing his fucking mind. He has no empathy for other people. Treats the neighborhood kids like shit, so they all gang up on him and make fun of him. I could go on and on, but that's not the case. My mother chooses to overlook it. She pulled him out of school in kindergarten and homeschools him. She defends him no matter what. He can literally walk up and hit one of my sisters, and my mother will yell at said sister and ask, "why they upset him".
Now, to my problem...as I earlier mentioned, I have an 11-month-old daughter. My brother despises her. She doesn't cry very often; when she does, its because she is hungry, tired, or needs changed. She is a pretty easy baby. But when she does cry, he will scream. I am talking bloody murder. If the windows or door is open, he will flip out on me for "embarrassing" him because I "made him scream". He will try and jump and roll around her when I ask him not to so he can "accidentally" hurt her. (I know this for a fact, because he does the same shit with my sisters and me.) My mom of course takes his side. If my daughter is crying, she will tell me to take the baby to the basement because I am bothering my brother. Take the baby to the basement? What the fuck? And Im not talking screaming for hours, I'm saying just started crying. My mom has also turned off the baby monitor before because the baby is bothering my brother. I flipped the fuck out and left with her for a few hours. If I yell back at my brother when he is screaming at my child, my mom screams at me saying I look like a fool for yelling at a 10 year old. No one corrects him! No one teaches him anything! She will justify everything he does as someone else's fault! Everything!
I fear for my daughter's safety in this house, Reddit. I have nowhere else to go. I don't know if I can live with her father, because we are like fire and gas and I don't want to bring up my daughter in an unhealthy environment, but I question anymore if that is the lesser of two evils at this point. I have tried to put in applications for subsidized housing, at least for while I am going to school (I am going to college for a degree in Medical Transcription so that I can work from home and bring in my paycheck while also taking care of my daughter. I don't want her having to grow up in daycare/with a babysitter). I feel like I have touched on all of the bases at this point and have you all up to where I'm at right now. The dynamics in this household are terrible. My mom really doesn't even care for my daughter (obviously) and I know that may sounds terrible, but its the truth. She doesn't hold her for more than five minutes before she is dumping her off on someone else. The only person who visibly loves my daughter is my step-dad. Even though she isn't blood, he treats her like a grandbaby. My mom is just so cold, and this is her first grandchild.
I'm sorry if I went off on a ramble. What should I do? Should I try and make things work with her father? In doing that, I would be burning the bridge with my mom most likely, since she despises him (she is one of those man-hating women...if you have a penis, you're a dumbass. She will tell you that too. Ignorant as fuck). Should I try to hold out for a little longer for an apartment to open up somewhere? I have put in applications in a ton of complexes and tried to explain my situation, but it really hasn't done any good... Or is there something else? Thank you to whoever read this far. All I want to do is do right by my daughter and have her in the healthiest atmosphere possible.
tl:dr - My brother's borderline autistic and threatens my daughter's safety and my mom does nothing about it. Should I burn the bridge and move back in with my ex or hold out a little longer?
