Looking at buying my friends 1995 YZ 125 2 Stroke. Advice?

Friend of mine offered to sell his 1995 YZ 125 2 stroke for $350. Unfortunately he can't get it to start, he says it may be the starter thats gone bad. I've never had a bike of my own, but I've ridden. Fortunately my neighbor and cousin are both mechanically savvy. I'm just curious if parts are available, and any other advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks guys!

EDIT: He informed me that he meant to say "stator" not starter! Any advice on that?
