Amman, Jordan is cloudless and scorching hot, but I haven't been sunburned in a month! Why?

I am of English/Irish/German/French descent--as white as we come (brown hair, reddish beard) and I sunburn fairly easily back home in Eastern Pennsylvania. I have been living in Amman, Jordan for a month now and have never been sunburned, despite not putting on sunscreen once. I've spent plenty of time in the sun--usually 2-4 hours/day, and the high has been between 88 and 105F without any clouds in the sky.

How come I haven't needed sunscreen to avoid being burned?
