Youth Hostel Association

Does anybody have any experience with the YHA? Is it that much worth it to sign up for this as opposed to just going and using normal hostels? Are there any special perks? Also, I would sign up for the YHA in America, and that would just work everywhere else, correct? Thanks for any input!
