Gravelorded?

So I am chilling in firelink like a boss and eating some food when all of a sudden i see the gravelord message 'disasters will go away once the gravelord is defeated' blah blah blah. So I put down my plate and look around first instinct is to check the parish since a BP spawns right in front of the elevator, no dice. Next I travel to the burg and go as far as the dueling bonfire and still see no BPs or a sign, so I backtrack to firelink and open up the wiki to see where else they spawn and i see catacombs, so I head down there and then realize I'm hollow. Now this is where I get puzzled. I'm hollow, standing in firelink and I get gravelorded. So great and almight DaS community, in which we all love, I shout out from my little corner of Lordran, do any of you know what just happened?

TL;DR hollow in firelink get gravelord message search all nearby areas and find nothing. WTH happened?
