July 10th. Entry 2.

Today I left the panic room.

Close to a month in isolation has made me very jumpy so it was slow going at first. Nearly shot a cat when I looked outside. Having a full day of access to what parts of the internet still function has caught me up to speed fairly well, although I’m probably just deluding to myself so I can actually follow through with this plan.

I opened the safe room to six inches of water and rot. Apparently whatever animalistic creatures people become when infected don’t do too well after two weeks of water. I heard the dude splashing around for a few days two weeks ago and he must have drowned or something because half his bloated organs are floating in my flooded basement. It’s picturesque, let me tell you.

I can’t remember the combo to my dad’s gun safe so I’m left with the plentiful .45 ammo in the safe room for the Sig Sauer, and I’ll end up leaving some of that behind because ammunition is fucking heavy. I packed my bags around lunch time and I’m almost ready to go…

Quick and dirty inventory for the curious: Water, purification tablets, enough dried food for a month (jerky and granola, yum), matches, lighter, flint and steel, hand powered flashlight, hand powered radio, space blankets, one more pair of pants, extra socks, camouflage hunting jacket, handgun and ammo, one person tent, bedroll, multitool, hatchet, whetstone, hunting knifes, other crap. All in all it weighs something like 65 lbs. Needless to say I’m taking a car. My neighbor’s electric car to be exact: thing’s quieter than a butterfly’s fart and sips gas if you drive smart. There’s extra shit like jerry cans of gas and other stuff like more food and ammo and water in the car; but I always have this stuff packed to run away with if/when shit hits the fan.

My plan is to find a way across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. From there, I’ll try Detroit and then possibly up to the Great Lakes to see what things are like there. I hope that the more rural areas have a greater possibility for other survivors by nature of having more space between each person.

I don’t know how often I’ll get to write more entries, the internet and power are up in my neighborhood, but elsewhere – who knows. I leave early in the morning to follow the sun and see what happened at the Allentown safe zone.
