Colonizing in light or dark environments?

Shroomry seems to be split on this issue (at least in the threads I saw) so in your opinion/experience is it better to colonize in light or dark environments? Also if anyone could link to a legitimate source for either side,I'd like to read up on this.

In the meantime I'll continue looking into this.
