Tips on building your own canvas?

I'm completely new to painting but I've had experience with carpentry. Thought I'd try my hand at abstract work and I want them to be entirely hand-made by me. Any tips or suggestions or how to build and prepare my own canvas? I'm also inexperienced with types of paint, so any suggestions for choosing a type of paint would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
