My mom said to be open minded about the bible.

I grew up in a christian home but never really had the religion engrained in my brain. I have been to church a few times when I was little but could tell that there was something off about it all.

I'm a college student and majoring in geology. I have loved science for as long as I could remember so it was inevitable that I would reject my religion and declare myself an atheist (I haven't officially said to my family that I am an atheist but I think they are getting the hints.)

A day ago I read the first part of Genesis where it describes the first week of creation. I asked my mom a few questions about it like: "If on the first day there was light, where is it coming from if the sun was created on the fourth day? and "If there are plants before the sun was created how did they survive without the sun?" She tried to not answer them and change the subject but I kept on asking and eventually she said "If you just read, it will make sense." I told her I was reading it but it's not making any sense at all. This passed semester I took a historical geology course at my college so it's really fresh in my mind and I'm trying to explain from a scientific point of view that the bible is flawed. She continues to say "Just read it! It makes sense, I have read it before. You may not believe what the bible says right now but someday you will." My little brother was there the whole time and suddenly says "Yeah, the bible doesn't lie" and I thought "Oh no... not you too." I kept trying to make them see the flaws through science but couldn't and then my mom says "You need to stop fighting it and have an open mind about it." WTF?? She told me, someone who is studying to be a scientist, to have an open mind! I left the room without showing them any of my rage.

I feel like my family is lost, and what makes me worry the most is that my little brother, who I thought was old enough to think for himself, is believing this crap because my mom said it was all true.
