Relationship help for a relationship virgin

So I'm 19, male, in college and I've never been out on a date or asked a girl out. I don't have any sort of clue whatsoever as to what a relationship is like or progresses like (other than false Hollywood renditions involving instantaneous sex and seemingly everlasting love).

But now there is this tremendous girl who I've talked to quite a bit (we had one class together and another where she visited her friends and we would talk sometimes) and I think I may have some feelings for her. I met her about 8 months ago, haven't seen for the past 3 and wont again until September as we will be sharing some classes. Right now she is in another country studying for the summer so I would have to wait anyway. I want to ask her out and I'm scared of being rejected. But I'm even more scared of her actually wanting to do something, afraid that I can't deliver. I've never been on a date and I don't know any proper relationship etiquette (hand-holding, kissing, etc.).

This just leaves me with about a million questions. Has the ship sailed on my opportunity? When would be the best time if it has not? Even if the above question is not in my favour, I would still like to know answers to these questions, and whatever else you can tell me. Do I blatantly ask her out or just subtly ask to do something with her? Whats a good first date event? When is kissing or hand-holding or whatever else the proper thing to do? How much time should I be aiming to spend with her without being over/under attached?

I know there is no "one glove fits all approach" but maybe I'm lucky enough for a few generalities?

TL;DR Never asked a girl out, want to ask someone I met 8 months ago. Should I still do it? How? When? And is there any advice for someone who has no clue what they're doing (especially in the physical expression department).

Also: I'm not sure if this should be in relationships since its not specific, Sorry If I'm wrong.
