Why don't Americans understand the difference between a Hero and a Victim?

I just saw a commercial for St. Jude's Children's Hospital where Sully Sullenberger calls a kid who has a cancer a "hero." Why does getting a disease make you a hero? I mean, it sucks, but why does it make you a hero?
