What are your stories of saving someone's life?
Being in law enforcement, I have many stories to tell, but most are job related, and expected of me. This story however, affected me the most as it came completely unexpected.
I was just browsing around the internet, as I do, and was going through some justin.tv channels. While looking through some screencaps, I noticed a middle aged male hosting on one of the cams. Usually it's the cute girls that's on these cams so out of curiosity I went into the room to see what he had to say.
The guy was obviously heavily intoxicated and was lighting a piece of paper on fire. Ok, now he has my attention. However, it slowly took a turn for the worse when I realized what his intentions were. He was crying and attempting to catch the room on fire. After a few attempts he left the cam view to only return with a bottle of pills. He began to take them by the handfulls downing them with alcohol.
Two weeks prior to this I went through some cybercrime investigations training. It was an introductory course, so it wasn't any FBI type stuff. But it did provide some basics. I began to cross-reference his screen names with any information I could pull up through the web.
At one point he mentioned his life was shit because he was a sex offender. He also answered his cellphone and I could briefly see the screen, enough to see an area code from North Carolina. Luckily sex offender registries are easy to view, along with their pictures, and I had a possible first name after crawling the web.
I found a match and immediately called their sheriff's office. Imagine trying to explain to a dispatcher why they need to send officers to this address based solely on what I was saying with me not even being in the same state. I finally convinced her enough to have the patrol supervisor call me.
After explaining it to him justin.tv terminated the camera feed. There were about 10 viewers in the room, all flagging the mods and the admins and they finally closed the room. The sergeant called me back and wanted an update before they attempted to approach the house; which I was unable to give them.
I received a call about 30 minutes later. They got to him just as he successfully started the fire in his room. His 78 year old father was asleep in the adjoining room.
tl;dr Saved a suicidal guy and his father because I was creeping webcams.
