Moving to Chicago?

One of my friends and I are considering moving to the great city of Chicago, but we have only been there a couple times. What neighborhoods are both safe and affordable (on two people most likely working min wage to start). I am moving from a city with gang violence and don't really want more of the same. We have been told Wicker and Rogers Park areas are good. Are there any others we should look?
