Why are there so many crackpots in physics?

I came upon this website from a Google search, written by a guy named Milo Wolff on "the wave theory of matter". My crackpot alarm immediately went off, but I couldn't help but dig deeper, looking for someone to confirm my suspicions. I was surprised to find a serious discussion on the matter, and a book with overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon. Check it out; I especially love this review, "This book shows that the universe CAN be a lot simpler if you think about it logically and forget the old ideas that are full of puzzles - like point particles and big bangs and 10 dimension universes. Then everything fits together. It is also exciting because the new quantum matter waves might be the way that minds communicate silently."

Wow.

Not sure why I keep reading this kind of stuff; it's like I'm getting an inside view of a cult. Kinda feels like the time I went down the cold fusion rabbit hole.
