My thoughts on booing Cano.
I was at the derby tonight... I was expecting some booing because KC sports talk radio had been talking about it for the past several days. But honestly I didn't expect it at the level of what actually happened. (I be honest again and say I didn't join the booing... but I'm not trying to come across as high and mighty.)
For those of you who don't know the back story, Cano made a de facto promise on ESPN that if a Royals position player were in the game it would be "the right thing to do" to include him. Billy Butler is having a pretty good All-Star season (.290/.361/.487, 16 HR, 53 RBI) and everyone around here assumed Cano would stick to what he said and put him on the team. When word came out that Cano didn't, several local sports radio hosts became angry and started the booing campaign.
Anyway, I think the fans' point was valid, but I just wish it hadn't of come across as spiteful as it did. KC fans haven't exactly had a lot to cheer for since after the strike in '94 and seeing your guy get slighted by a Yankee drove a lot of people over the top... add sociological groupthink into the mix and it became a near frenzy.
At least it made a normally slow and overrated home run derby interesting for a change.
