MacBook Pro question.

I'm looking into getting a new laptop and am thinking of getting a MacBook Pro. I was wondering, how long your MacBook Pros have lasted, also any tips for a new Mac user? Pretty sure that's what I want but these are things I need to know before investing.

Edit; Thanks for all the useful information.
