Please educate me regarding some fixie bikes/culture issues
So I've been watching a lot of fixie related videos lately; I'm not interested in buying a fixie, but I really enjoy the diversity of bikes available nowadays and I love watching bike videos in general.
First of all, let's take this video as an example: THE ∙ HUB - Josh Hayes.
- Why is the guy riding at very high revolutions per minute most of the time? Is this some kind of trick to emphasize he is riding with a godly speed? This seems to be a very common "thing" in a lot of fixie videos I have watched. Most of the time when I see a fixie in the wild, the "rider" is walking along it, so I'm quite skeptic when it comes to associating a fixie with speed (apart from track usage of course).
- I fail to understand the excitement shown by the folks that commented on that video, let alone how the guy "is always killing it". From where I stand, a guy shredding on a steep erupting volcano, a pro roadie climbing Col du Tourmalet with an excellent time or an Iron Man winner would be really "killing it".
- The skidding part seems pretty random and highly irrelevant, why isn't he skidding between or along cars in traffic?
Am I overreacting/bashing this poor guy or some my rants observations could be perceived as facts?
