A Powerful Moment I Just Experienced

A little over an hour ago, we were just finishing up at the hospital after dropping off a patient. We were asked if we could do an emergency transfer since we were right there in the ER. A man had been shot and was badly injured. He needed to be transferred to another hospital for the proper surgery.

When I walked into his room, the nurses were running around and the on duty chaplain was standing next to him. I walked over to him and started introducing myself, explain to him what we were going to do, etc...While we were waiting for the nurses to get everything ready, the chaplain took his hand and started praying quietly. He told us he was scared and his just wanted this fixed. I told him we were taking him to a great hospital with great surgeons that would take care of him. The patient asked us if the chaplain could come with him and I told him that we couldn't bring the chaplain because of space. But I told him that in addition to being an EMT I was also a chaplain. The patient relaxed a little bit and for a little bit things were quiet.

While I stood on one side, and the hospital chaplain on the other holding his hand, it was clear there was something else present too. I felt a reassurance that things would be OK. In that moment I was reminded of a verse that I had read earlier tonight and if I had remembered all of it I would have told the patient. It was Isaiah 41:10, "do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand."

I just wanted/needed to share this experience with you all. A lot has been going on lately, and even though God wasn't necessarily there for me, being there in that room with that young man has brought me some much needed peace.
