afterwards
i barely get out alive
and spend the rest of
the day in shock, clutching
the steering wheel
and peering out the windshield
like the window
of a fallout shelter.
i wonder
if she feels the same way or
is walking free amongst the
streets, love permeating
the world like dust does
when you disturb sentiments
in the loft.
either way, i am
confined to work, travelling
from site to site making sure
the highwaymen laying
asphalt don't do
the taxpayers out of pocket.
on the way home
she texts me she went to
church (which is wholly
out of character)
and blew out
some votive candles.
i'm not sure you can mourn
your own death, but i do.
selfish of me, really.
