Date with a guy I met at a bar? [22/f]

So the other night I met a fairly nice gentleman. He made me laugh and we had a few good chats about some different things. We exchanged numbers. While he seems like a good person, I'm a little scared about hanging out with someone I don't really know. Drunken me might not be as good at picking up subtle flaws as sober me.

He offered to take me out for dinner and wanted to pick me up. I suggested meeting him somewhere for drinks since I live within walking distance of a few popular bars.

I'm a bit scared and don't really know what to do in this situation. If I get drunk and want to make sexy time, bringing back a stranger could result in rape or murder or all kinds of crazy. As a single female who's never done this kind of thing, these kinds of things go through my head.

Are my fears irrational? Do people do this sort of thing all the time?
