I need some advice about a college situation.
Hi everyone! TL;DR at the bottom.
So I'm in a sticky situation for college this fall, and I could use some advice on what to do. I'm a United States citizen, living in the southeast. Any more information regarding my location will need to be PMed since I don't want to be too specific. Unfortunately I missed the deadline for on-campus housing (due to extenuating circumstances, the housing deposit couldn't be paid on time) so I don't have anywhere to live for this upcoming semester. I asked if there were any leftover on-campus spots available but there aren't any left for Fall 2012.
To resolve this problem, I was planning to get a summer job that would help get me started with expenses for an off-campus apartment, but sadly that did not work out. From there, I was going to get an on-campus job (very likely to obtain, but also uncertain as well) to help pay for the rent during the semester. I have a few possessions I am willing to sell even but I don't think that will be enough to cover a deposit ($200-$400) and the first month's rent ($395-$500).
Currently I am not financially independent. My parents are in a financial hole right now...they won't be able to help much. My nearby relatives are retired and live on fixed incomes, so they too can't be of much help sadly.
Possible options I am considering at this time:
1) Commuting -- I live a little over one hour away from my current school. The distance is ~50 miles one way, and it is a "one-shot" trip on the interstate highway. It is possible to commute, but my parents say that it would take a toll on the family car and with gas prices the way the are, that may not be such a good idea. With my current fall schedule, I would only be attending school Monday - Thursday, which is a plus for commuting. I was also considering hiring a driver of some sort for transportation (since I don't have my own car or a license), but I don't think this will work out.
2) Living with a nearby family member -- I have a first cousin who lives near my university. To be honest, we aren't entirely on good terms. I was considering living with her but she has a family (two small children) and is quite busy as she is a professor. I would have to rely on her or her husband for transportation to and from school. There are a few "catches" to this situation, but it could be a lot worse.
I haven't consulted with her about this yet, but I doubt this will actually be a viable option due to the living/transportation circumstances...but it's something that's there.
3) Withdrawing (worst case scenario) -- This plan is to withdraw at my current school for Fall 2012 and transfer somewhere closer for Spring 2013. If I were to withdraw from my current school and return in Spring 2013, I would still be without a place to stay. On-campus housing is usually for the year, and that goes to incoming transfers first, and space is already limited for them. I know housing for transfers isn't guaranteed usually, but since I will be applying early to schools, the chances are high for me to nail a spot on-campus. As of now, this looks like this is what I will have to do. I'm really trying to avoid withdrawing since my federal loans will start up (I have to be currently enrolled in a school and not fall below half-time status). I won't have any income to pay them when they start if I withdraw. Technically I can work out something and have them deferred, but I really don't want to go this route if I can help it.
Any suggestions or a "course of action" to take would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for reading, in whole or in part.
TL;DR: I'm a United States citizen, living in the southeast. I don't have anywhere to live on-campus for Fall 2012, and all of available housing is taken. Getting an off-campus apartment is financially infeasible for myself and for my immediate family. I neither have a car nor a license which would be beneficial with finding a solution to my problem. I'm currently looking for options as outlined above, but things are looking bleak as of now and I may have to withdraw from my current school and transfer to another school in the spring, which is a worse case scenario. Any suggestions or a "course of action" to take regarding my problem would be greatly appreciated.
